Stafford Rangers FC Statement: Appointment of Technical Director

Stafford Rangers FC are proud and excited to announce the appointment of George Pilkington as the club’s new Technical Director — a major addition that signals the club’s ambition to drive forward both on and off the pitch.

George brings an exceptional level of experience, professionalism and winning mentality, having enjoyed a distinguished 16-year playing career with over 650 senior appearances across the Football League and National League. A former Everton trainee, he established himself as a commanding presence at Port Vale, making more than 250 appearances and earning Player of the Year honours in the 2005–06 season.

He went on to captain both Port Vale and Luton Town, achieving success at the highest levels, including a memorable Wembley victory in the Football League Trophy in 2009. At Luton, he was also recognised as Player of the Season — a testament to his consistency, leadership and influence within the dressing room.

George’s winning pedigree continued with Mansfield Town, where he secured promotion as Conference Premier champions, before becoming a standout figure at Macclesfield Town. There, he made almost 200 appearances, collected multiple Player of the Year awards, and played a pivotal role in their National League title-winning campaign in 2017–18, helping return the club to the Football League.

A proud local, Rugeley-born George lives in the area with his wife and family and is excited to return to football with Stafford Rangers, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the modern game. His leadership, expertise and knowledge of football make him a valuable addition to the club, as it continues its development both on and off the pitch.

In his new role, George will play a central part in shaping the club’s future. He will work closely with Graham Deakin and his management team to implement strong structures, building on the high standards set this summer, with a clear and sustainable pathway for success throughout the football club.

George said he is excited by the vision of the club and is fully committed to helping drive Stafford Rangers forward:

“I’m delighted to be joining Stafford Rangers at such an important time.

There is a clear vision and ambition here, and I’m looking forward to playing my part in helping the club move to the next level.”

Manager Graham Deakin added:

“George is a fantastic addition to the club.

His experience, leadership and understanding of the game will be invaluable to both the staff and players.

I’m really looking forward to working closely with him as we push forward together.”

CEO Dave Smith commented:

“I would like to thank our supporters for their patience during this process.

It was vital that we identified the right individual — someone who not only brings experience but also shares our values and ambition.

George is exactly that person. This is a significant appointment for Stafford Rangers, and one that we believe will help drive the club towards the success we are all striving for.

We have put a strong structure in place, and now it’s about building momentum and delivering on our vision.”

CEO David Smith

This appointment marks another important step in the club’s journey, as Stafford Rangers continue to build a strong foundation for long-term success.
